Imagine you are the Loner Boy, write a poem, to express how you might feel and what you might be thinking, as the Loner Boy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As they walk by,
I stare longingly and sigh,

Oh,
How I wish they would say,
“Why don’t we be friends today?”

I know hoping is futile,
But a little could go a mile,

I try my best not to cry,
But I know I can’t deny,

I’ve been at this wall for so long,
What did I do wrong,

Why won’t they talk to me,
Don’t they know how I long to be free,

Of this loneliness that engulfs me,
Oh, how I wish to flee,

Why won’t they say a word,
What did I do that was so absurd,

I watch them play so longingly,
When they look I pretend not to see,

What stops me from saying hi,
I seriously wonder why,

I can’t even bring myself to smile,
Why have I been pretending all this while,

I need to stop pretending,
What am I defending,

My mom tells me I’m moving away,
For one last time I watch them play,

I leave my legacy with a piece of chalk,
By this wall I know they will walk,

I finally smile after what seems like forever,
I know I’ll remember this moment whenever, wherever,

What do you think of ‘The loner’?

Firstly, I don’t think the boy was shy, more of reluctant and hesitant. Notice that he faces the children in the playground playing, rather than staring at the wall which he leans on. The lines

“Smacks his hands against the bricks

And other boredom-beating tricks”

Show that he seemed to be waiting for something; killing time while he waited. I doubt the children dared approach him, because he acted in a way that would rival that of a psycho. The boy probably did not realize this and thought that the children were hated him.

Personally though, I think he was bullied.

In an elementary school, simple phrases like ‘I hate you’ or ‘I don’t want to be your friend’ may hurt the other party deeply. The boy may have been on the receiving end of such taunts and refused to befriend anyone after that, resulting in being psychologically scarred. This prevented him from approaching anyone.

I think he regards the wall his only friend, as he seems to lean on it ‘for support’ as well as comfort. He also seems to regard the space in the wall his as was chalked

‘watch this space’

I believe that this was written by the boy himself, in hope of being noticed. There is something though, that he and the children failed to notice, they gave him their attention, even if it were ‘low-talking’.

What do you think of the children?

I think that the children are normal children but I do think that they should’ve paid more attention to the boy. I think they believe that the boy did not belong; as the author wrote

And a place at the wall

For who won’t belong.

This seemed to show that the boy himself believed that he did not belong. The children too believe this is so as

Each in our familiar clique

We pass him by and never speak,

He did not belong in their cliques but they should have made an effort to get him to join.

How I sympathize with the joker?

I sympathize with the joker but only to a certain extent as though he is a sheer lunatic; there were life-changing events in his life which caused him to become what he is as of now. His family was killed and it drove him to the brink of insanity. The turning point was when he fell into the vat of acid, disfiguring him permanently. True to human nature, he looked for someone to blame and that unfortunate person had to be the Batman, Gotham’s masked vigilante because the Batman did not save his family. The reason I sympathize with him to a certain extent is because he is cunning, ruthless and takes the lives of others lightly without much hesitation.

What I have learnt from this lesson?

I have learnt to analyze characters and it is important not to judge a book solely by its cover. First impressions count but they are not necessarily what the person may be like. It is safer not to jump to conclusions when the character of a person is being questioned.
